Feature Spotlight: Achievements (AW)

Most gamers appreciate achievements, and Ant War is happy to give them what they want.

Ant War gives achievement hunters the ability to grab 112 achievements spanning 14 achievement categories.

This scratches an itch for many players and it helps make and retain long term fans of the game as they come back to complete achievements.

14 achievement categories covering every aspect of the game

The achievement menu matches the visual style of the Starcraft 2 interface. I intentionally matched both of the Ant War specific popups next to the menu with the Starcraft 2 popups next to them. This is a divergence from the earthy ant-centric theme dominating the rest of the User Interface. The green achievement categories are easy to acquire and cover basic introductions to the game and learning the mechanics. Yellow are more difficult to obtain, requiring playing specific game modes well and becoming an expert in the 4 ant races. Red represents the most difficult achievements, with Mastery in particular requiring a substantial amount of wins in the game to acquire.

Experience Achievements are easy to acquire and encourage new players

Many of the achievements are named after pop culture references or funny one liners. “We will watch your career with great interest” for example, is based upon a well-known line in Star Wars episode 1.

“Buy a Better Toaster” is a reference to the fact that gamers routinely call old computers, that cause a lot of lag and inhibit effective gameplay, toasters. Having 3000 units or more in one game is known to lag older machines.

Fire ant achievements focusing on the combat-centric queen and special units

Crazy ant achievements focused on the duplicating queens that blow themselves up and special units.

Race specific achievements encourage players to master the different mechanics of their unique races and build the race’s specialist units.

Hovering the mouse over the lock icon reveals the earnable or earned skin associated with the achievement.

Players are able to earn cosmetic skins for their units by getting required achievements. In the case of the example above, getting the “What Just Happened?” achievement unlocks the Primal Soldier Nest- a green variant of the Soldier Nest structure with dinosaur-like plates sticking out of it. Similar to the plates on the back of a stegosaurus.
